Introduced in \u201896, it was the standard used in every phone<\/strong> and it made the GSM<\/strong> folks happy. Essentially, it was your entire phone on a card<\/strong>. It made things simple. If you wanted a new phone<\/strong>, all you\u2019d need to do was take that SIM<\/strong> out, pop it into any phone<\/strong> and suddenly your phone number<\/strong> would be transferred to the new device<\/strong>. For over a decade, this was the standard, which made switching phones a breeze<\/strong>. Now? Not so much.<\/p>

Micro-SIM<\/strong><\/h4>

Enter Apple<\/strong>. Wanting to save precious room for its newest generation of smartphones<\/strong>, Apple<\/strong> switched from using the standard Mini-SIM<\/strong> to the Micro-SIM <\/strong>once the iPhone<\/strong> 4 hit shelves.<\/p>

Surprisingly, the Micro-SIM <\/strong>wasn\u2019t some new flashy SIM<\/strong> developed for the latest iPhone<\/strong>. Believe it or not, it was first introduced in 2003.<\/p>

Back then, its purpose was clear: if a device was too small to fit a mini-SIM<\/strong>, you\u2019d have to use the micro-SIM<\/strong>. In addition, the micro-SIM<\/strong> was designed for backward compatibility, meaning it can work with input generated by an older version of the SIM<\/strong> (such as the Mini-SIM<\/strong>).<\/p>

In addition, despite its smaller size, the micro<\/strong>\u2019s performance wasn\u2019t impacted at all, as chip\u2019s contact area remained the same. It turned out to be scaled down \u2013 the card only needed its excess plastic to be cut from it.<\/p>

When Apple <\/strong>released the iPhone<\/strong> 4 with the micro-SIM<\/strong>, it became the standard for most smartphones<\/strong>. Samsung, Nokia, and HTC<\/strong> are just a few of the manufacturers <\/strong>that adopted the new Micro-SIM<\/strong>. If you thought Apple<\/strong> was done using smaller SIM cards<\/strong>, think again. Perhaps Apple was peeved they had to use a SIM card <\/strong>from 2003 on the shiny new iPhone<\/strong> 4. Maybe they just wanted to stay ahead of the curve and throw competitors off their trail.<\/p>

In any case, the launch of the iPhone<\/strong> 5 prompted the public to realize there was a new SIM<\/strong> in town: the Nano-SIM<\/strong>. This choice to go small made life pretty difficult for users. Anyone upgrading to an iPhone <\/strong>5 or switching from Android <\/strong>now had to get a new SIM card<\/strong> or an adapter.<\/p>

Fortunately, most smartphones<\/strong> released since 2014 (both iOS <\/strong>and Android<\/strong>) now support Nano SIM card technology<\/strong> as the standard<\/strong>. No. I\u2019m joking, that would be horrible. But get this: the next version of the SIM<\/strong> likely will be impossible to hold. That\u2019s because it will be entirely virtual.<\/p>

Cards<\/strong> like the eSIM<\/strong> and the Soft SIM <\/strong>are looking to be the next carnation of the SIM card<\/strong> we\u2019ll see, a software \u201ccard\u201d that carries all of the SIM\u2019s <\/strong>original functions without any of the plastic or brass hardware bits.<\/p>
